We were heartbroken on Sunday to hear about the murder in Jerusalem of 26-year-old Eliyahu Kay הי״ד in a terrorist attack. We send our deepest condolences to his parents, Avi and Devorah. The tragedy was particularly poignant for the United Synagogue family as Eli’s grandparents are South Hampstead's Rabbi Shlomo and Rebbetzen Lynndy Levin and his uncles and aunts include Rabbi Baruch and Rebbetzen Kezi Levin of Brondesbury Park and Rabbi Eli and Rebbetzen Lauren Levin, also of South Hampstead. We wish the entire family chayim aruchim, long life.
Click here to read a beautiful tribute by Rabbi Eli Levin in this week’s Jewish Chronicle. And click here to listen to a d'var Torah by Rabbi Baruch Levin recorded for a roof top minyan in Modi'in which has been named after Eli.
If you'd like to send a message of condolence to the family, please reply to this email and we'll pass it on. May the memory of Eli be for a blessing.

New Centre for Rabbinic Excellence
This week we can announce the creation of the new Centre for Rabbinic Excellence which will provide our Rabbis and Rebbetzens with ongoing professional development opportunities.
The Centre will launch in early 2022 and Rabbi Nicky Liss has been appointed the Centre’s first Director after a thorough recruitment search which attracted a strong field of candidates from the UK and abroad. Rabbi Liss is the Rabbi of Highgate United Synagogue and recent Chair of the Rabbinic Council of the United Synagogue and. Rabbi Liss will combine this new part-time role with his current position at Highgate.
Rabbi Mordechai Ginsbury has been appointed the Centre’s Associate Director and Judy Markovic has been appointed the Programme Manager and will organise tailored training and programmes for United Synagogue Rebbetzens. They both bring significant experience having worked for P’eir, the United Synagogue’s current training arm. You can read the full announcement by clicking here.
We wish them mazal tov and hatzlacha, much success, in their new roles.

A new doughnut for Chanukah!
Today we can announce the winners of our Design a Delicious Doughnut competition in partnership with the Jewish Chronicle. Well over 200 wonderful ideas were submitted and from them, Carmelli’s bakers designed and made their top six: bakewell tart, pumpkin spice, caffe mocha, mince pie, mojito and miso & chocolate.
The finalists were sent for tasting to our expert judging panel made up of Rabbi Piny Hackenbrock, Chair of the Rabbinic Council of the United Synagogue, Victoria Prever, the JC food editor and – most importantly – pupils from Sinai Jewish Primary School with their headteacher Juliette Lipshaw. They had a very difficult time choosing, but, after much deliberation, and many doughnuts, Caffe Mocha was crowned the winning doughnut and is now on sale in Carmelli’s.
Congratulations to Borehamwood and Elstree member Jonathan Jackson and Hampstead Synagogue member Charles Delroy who both came up with the idea and will each get a whole box of Caffe Mocha doughnuts!
Chanukah starts on Sunday evening – on behalf of everyone at the United Synagogue, we wish you and your family a wonderful time. Do check out our Facebook page for our short Chanukah videos every evening and there are details of our Chanukah shiurim below.
