News and Views The Torah tells us: “Now if you listen to My voice, and keep My covenant, you will be a G-d’s treasure.” These are the words that G-d tells the Jewish people - a promise of their stature if they keep the Torah which He is about to give to the Jewish people.
I would have thought that the intention of the words “Listen to my voice” relate to the study and observance of Torah. If that is the case, keeping my covenant - USHEMARTEM ES BRISI is a complete repetition of the same concept - keeping my covenant surely relates to the observance of the Torah! What then does God mean when he tells us to listen to his voice?
The Rebbe from Slonim provides the following beautiful insight. He says that there is something that is needed before Torah can be given to each and every Jew, and that is that a Jew should always hear the voice of Hashem which is speaking to Him. G-d sends us messages every single day, in so many different way, and we need to be open to hearing the full message that G-d is giving us, to be awake to the ways in which He is guiding us through our lives.
A story is told of Rabbi Moshe Leib from Sassov, the father of the Sassov dynasty,a venerable sage that illustrates this point. He was asked by a gentile wagon driver to lift an object off the floor and to put it into his wagon. Rabbi Moshe was known for his piety and and his sagacity replied: I can’t. The driver replied to him - you can, but you don’t want to. Rabbi Moshe Leib heard these words, but not in the way the wagon driver meant. He told his students : I understood that this was a message for me from the Almighty. I have thought that I can’t be a better Jew, and he is telling me through this wagon driver - you can - you just don’t want to.
This is what it means to listen to the messages which are given to us. G-d sends us messages every day - it could be through a weather forecast, through milk that goes sour, through a letter which goes to the wrong address, or money found on the street. Each one is a message. The question is: are we prepared to listen?
I wish you all a very good Shabbos.
Rabbi Steven, Siobhan, Maya and Talia Dansky.
