The Tribe team have been in Poland this week supporting refugees from Ukraine, working with a University Jewish Chaplaincy student group. Nearly two million refugees have entered the country.
Batsheva Wolf, our secondary education and youth manager, sent us this moving report:
"The city of Warsaw is overflowing and the bus station shows it. Hordes of people, queueing for clothes, for a place to stay, for answers. Upstairs a room is set up to accommodate some mothers and children (the men left behind). In a corner, there is space for the children to play. As we come in, the children flock around us and in no time we are making crowns, tying bracelets, throwing beachballs around and making it known that this is a zone for fun.
"With Google Translate at our side, we communicate with the kids. Anasty, a 9-year old girl with an endless amount of creativity, sits with us for the 2½ hours that we are there, creating bracelets out of string and glasses out of pipe-cleaners. When we tell Anasty that we're leaving, she frowns. "But we'll be back tomorrow!", we quickly add. "Hurrah!", she says with a beaming smile.
"In the afternoon we are at one of the hotels run by the Jewish Agency. We put on music and make puppets with the children, play football and other games. All we try to do is create a space in which the kids can feel like kids and forget about this dreadful time for a little while."
You can read more from the Tribe team here. Batsheva will be speaking at the Alei Tzion US community in Hendon next Shabbat (26 March) after shacharit. All welcome.

Homes for Ukraine
We welcome the government's Homes for Ukraine Scheme. The United Synagogue has already been asked by many of our members what more they can do to help those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. The government’s local sponsorship scheme should provide a tangible way for our community to provide support for Ukrainians in need of shelter and the United Synagogue is pleased to be supporting it. Click here to sign up.
World Jewish Relief is also offering support for people considering offering their home. Click here for information. We're also looking at the community sponsorship model through shuls and expect details from the government in the coming weeks.
We've put some more ways to help the people of Ukraine on our website.

Jewish families here need your support
Closer to home, people need our support too. The rising cost of living has already seen families hit with an increase in household fuel and food bills, many of whom were already struggling to make ends meet because of the pandemic. For nearly two years, the United Synagogue's Chesed department has been quietly supporting hundreds of Jewish families with a weekly food parcel containing items such as soup, pasta, cheese and milk. We'll also be providing these families with Pesach food parcels in a few weeks’ time.
We are very worried about the cost of living crisis and anticipate an increase in demand for our services. On March 27-28, we will be holding a fundraising campaign to raise £500,000 to enable us to support as many Jewish families as possible, and the wider work of US Chesed. Please be a part of this campaign by becoming a Chesed champion and telling your friends and family about the campaign. Sign up to be a Chesed champion at www.theus.org.uk/champion.
