Texas synagogue hostages

Thursday 20 January, 2022

We were extremely relieved to hear that all the hostages taken by an armed gunman inside a synagogue in Texas were freed on Sunday.

As our President, Michael Goldstein, said this week, it's a shocking reminder that Jews around the world are targeted just for being Jewish, and of the need, sadly, for security at Jewish community buildings.

The United Synagogue continues to be grateful to the security services, police and the Community Security Trust for keeping us safe. We must all continue to be vigilant and we thank our shul security leaders and volunteers again for all they do.

One day the truth will out

The terrorist didn’t travel 4,500 miles from Blackburn to Texas and end up in a synagogue by chance, despite what some early media reports said.

Antisemitism is alive and well and this makes the timing of Holocaust Memorial Day next week very powerful. As ever, our communities are holding a number of events to mark the day.

Why do antisemites – including the Texas terrorist – believe conspiracy theories about Jews? That we control the banks or caused 9/11 and the Grenfell tower disaster? These difficult questions will be the subject of a powerful online programme by South Hampstead Synagogue and The National Holocaust Centre & Museum on Sunday evening.

Lord John Mann, actor and writer Tracy-Ann Oberman, Canon Dr Giles Fraser, interfaith activist Julie Siddiqi MBE and Google’s James Rosenthal will discuss what they think it will take to end these myths. To put a question to the panel chaired by The Holocaust Centre's Marc Cave, email tamara@southhampstead.org.

In addition, Rabbi Shlomo Levin, the Senior Rabbi at South Hampstead Synagogue will be in conversation with Holocaust survivor Janine Webber BEM and Cambodian genocide survivor Sokphal Din BEM. South Hampstead’s Rabbi Eli Levin will lead a candle lighting ceremony with live musical accompaniment by Levi Levin.

The event is free and donations are welcome. Book your online tickets now.

Introducing Dorot

Introducing Dorot

Earlier this week on Tu B'Shevat we launched Dorot, our ambitious new environmental initiative. Together with the Chief Rabbi, we want to reduce our environmental impact, so we've created Dorot, which means "generations" in Hebrew and is made up of seven projects which we'll roll out during 2022. We want to have a tree planted for each of our 37,000 members to sequester carbon dioxide from the air. You can find out more about each of the seven projects and read a welcome by the Chief Rabbi on our website.
