We're delighted that ever more people are returning to our warm and welcoming shul services across our communities. But we know numbers in some communities are yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. That’s why we launched 'Project Welcome’ earlier this year, an initiative that does exactly what it says on the tin. We must reach out and welcome back members who have not yet felt comfortable to return due to Covid. In partnership with the Chief Rabbi and his office, the Project Welcome team has been engaging with all our communities to offer support and resources to help each community to seize this opportunity.
We've received some great ideas from our shuls and to give you a flavour of what’s planned we wanted to share some with you – particularly from communities you may know less about.
Barnet have devised a fascinating project called 'Shul2You'. They hope to divide the community into 12 'Tribes' of 50-170 adult members each and taking shul out into hosts' homes. Tribes will be subdivided geographically or demographically into wards or families. There will be local activities such as coffee and cake afternoons and local kiddushim. This will be followed by coming back to shul to bring the whole community feel back.
In beautiful Southport, the community are producing a professional video of the town and communal facilities to encourage people to join – and move to Southport. This might attract families who want to move out of Liverpool and Manchester and retirees seeking long coastal walks and a warm and friendly community. A programme of events will include Friday night dinners with visiting Rabbis, shiurim in people’s homes and afternoon tea with guest speakers.
Bushey have launched a volunteer enrichment programme which not only seeks to build its volunteer base, thank them and offer training but also seeks to strengthen the community through bringing volunteers together. They are also planning to extend their successful 'University of the Third Age'-style programme and have purchased a marquee on site to ensure that a wide range of activities for members can take place there daily.
Finsbury Park's Befriending Club will target their members who still feel insecure in a crowd and have rarely left their home since the pandemic. They’re aiming to slowly encourage the normalisation of socialising after Covid.
Welwyn Garden City are producing a new members’ programme to help them settle into the community. They’ll get a like-minded ‘buddy’ to help introduce them to other members and Rabbi and Rebbetzen Tatz will also pop over to visit and present them with a small gift. The community is also going to start a monthly children’s service and integrate the children into the main service. Post-Bar Mitzvah boys will be invited to read their Haftorah on their ‘anniversary’ and post-Bat Mitzvah girls will be invited to give a d’var Torah.
Hull are concentrating on getting members to return to shul by bringing members back to services with social events and are using the festival cycle to do so.
Do check what’s going on in your local US community!
