A 20% rise

Thursday 24 March, 2022

The United Synagogue's Chesed department has seen a dramatic rise in the number of Jewish families asking for support to make ends meet. This year well over 700 families and individuals have asked us for help, a rise of more than 20% since before the pandemic. They are struggling with the double blow of lost income during Covid and the rising cost of living.

We'll be stepping in once again to provide them with food parcels this Pesach. The parcels will contain more than 20 different items including grape juice and fruit juice, cheese and tuna, tea and coffee, jam and butter, salt and pepper and some chocolate and biscuits.

We're bracing ourselves for even greater demand after Pesach when the energy price cap is removed and fuels costs are expected to rise by more than 50%.

US Chesed needs to raise £500,000 for its work and meet this additional demand. We're holding an online fundraising campaign on Sunday and Monday and need your help. Donations are welcome right now via

www.charityextra.com/uschesed/youandus.

All donations will be matched meaning whatever you give will be doubled. It is likely that donations will also go towards supporting Ukrainian refugees in the UK.

Michelle Minsky, Head of US Chesed, told us: "Many of the families we have been supporting for two years were already struggling to make ends meet because of the pandemic. During this time, US Chesed has been quietly supporting hundreds of Jewish families with a weekly food parcel containing items such as soup, tinned vegetables, pasta and rice, fresh items like cheese and milk and some household items such as toiletries. We anticipate an event bigger demand for our services next month when fuel costs are expected to rocket. We need to help hundreds of families this Pesach and beyond so if anyone can donate to our fundraising appeal, we’d be very grateful. Please help us to help them."

Chef and volunteers needed!

US Chesed together with Barnet United Synagogue run a weekly "pop-up restaurant" attended by some 30 people from the community who are older and isolated. We are seeking volunteers with some culinary know-how and a Head Chef to take responsibility for the kitchen on a Monday from 9.30am-12pm. You will be part of an established team of friendly and supportive volunteers and receive a full induction in the kitchen.

If you would like more information, please contact Hannah Gerson on hgerson@theus.org.uk for an informal chat. Let's get cooking!

Two new rabbinic couples!

The pandemic disrupted many things, including the induction by the Chief Rabbi of a number of our new rabbinic couples! We wish a hearty mazal tov to Rabbi Yossi and Rebbetzen Channah Hambling at Birmingham Central United Synagogue and to Rabbi Akiva and Rebbetzen Batya Rosenblatt of Hadley Wood Jewish Community as both rabbis celebrated their inductions on Sunday. We'll have reports in next week's You&US.

We hope you had a wonderful Purim. Shabbat shalom,

Steven Wilson

How can I help the people of Ukraine?

How can I help the people of Ukraine?

Donate. The best way aid agencies say we can support those in need is by donating money, not goods, to charities like World Jewish Relief.
Daven. We continue to pray for an end to the war and senseless bloodshed. Please join us in saying Tehillim, psalms, and the Chief Rabbi‘s prayer.
Learn. There are many trusted reporters providing accurate reports from Ukraine and the surrounding countries. You can also watch our briefing event.
Government sponsorship scheme. The government scheme should provide a tangible way to provide support for Ukrainians in need of shelter in the UK.

US shuls hold women-only megillah readings

Over a dozen United Synagogue communities held women-only megillah readings this Purim!

Communities in Borehamwood and Elstree, Brondesbury Park, Bushey, Central, Finchley, Golders Green, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Mill Hill, Mill Hill East, Radlett, Richmond and South Hampstead enjoyed megillah readings by women for women.

At Central Synagogue's first ever women’s megillah reading, the megillah was read by 18-year-old Ella Schuchman and was followed by a champagne lunch. You can read more about it and see photos from the readings by clicking the link below.
