That women are forced to abort their unborn children and are then sterilised to prevent them from becoming pregnant again? That forced imprisonment, the separation of children from their parents and a culture of intimidation and fear have become the norm?"
"Sadly," concluded the Chief Rabbi, "the weight of evidence of this persecution of the Uighur Muslim minority in China is overwhelming...Every one of us shares in the responsibility to act."
With this rallying call, the United Synagogue is proud to support an important conference being led by Magen Avot, one of our communities, later this month. Supported by the Office of the Chief Rabbi, Hampstead Synagogue, Muswell Hill Synagogue, World Jewish Relief and the Board of Deputies, the conference will ask: what can we actually do about the plight of the Uyghur community?
Through three high-level panels, faith leaders, politicians and activists will share practical things we can all do to support the Uyghur community. In the face of genocide, it’s time for action.
Join MPs Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Lisa Nandy to debate the issue. Hear firsthand testimony from Rahima Mahmut, a Uyghur activist. Learn from Kelley Eckels Currie, the former United States Representative at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and Bennett Freeman, the former United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights & Labour.
The conference will take place online on Sunday 11 July, 5-8pm. All are welcome and there's no need to book. Check out the programme and the link to the livestream here: www.TheUS.tv/TimeForAction. It's time for action. Shabbat shalom,
