Did you know that the government has introduced a single-use plastic ban from October 1? In a few weeks' time, it will be illegal for businesses to sell single-use disposable plastics.
As the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has said, plastic pollution takes hundreds of years to break down and inflicts serious damage to our oceans, rivers and land. It is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, from the production and manufacture of the plastic itself to the way it is disposed.
The ban is an opportunity for us and for our shuls to move to more environmentally-friendly ways of running events and enjoying kiddush together. Congratulations to 15 of our communities who have already gone plastic-free or completely disposable-free (click here to see who they are).
Our Dorot sustainability team has put together some resources to help your community do the same:
- Click here to read our tips to make a plastic-free kiddush and events.
- Click here to watch our workshop on how to go disposables-free.
- Set up a meeting with our Dorot team for a 1:1 consultation on going disposables-free by emailing Ben Vos, bbvos@theus.org.uk.
- Although they're a while off, you can also read our tips from last year for a plastic-free Purim and Pesach.
It is expected that banning these items will have a significant impact on reducing plastic waste and littering in England. Plastic cutlery, for instance, was one of the most littered items in the country in 2020. Billions of plastic carrier bags have been taken out of circulation as a result of introducing a charge for them in shops and it is hoped this initiative will have a similar positive impact.
This way we can all play a part in protecting our planet. As the Chief Rabbi has said: "The Talmud (Tamid 32a) defines a wise person as "one who anticipates the consequences of their behaviour". It has never been easier nor more important for humanity to anticipate the consequences of our continued reliance on phenomena such as fossil fuels and unsustainable manufacturing processes. There is a clear consensus among the foremost scientists on just how devastating those consequences will be.
"Each one of us has a responsibility to safeguard and protect the planet we all share. Not only for those who inhabit the earth now, but for the sake of all future generations."
