Lord Alan Sugar was in touch with Chigwell and Hainault United Synagogue this week to set them a very special Apprentice-style challenge. He has challenged members of the community to match the £600,000 donation he and his family have made to the shul as part of a £1.2m project to raise vital funds for the shul.
Lord Sugar, a member of Chigwell and Hainault, has appeared in a special film released ahead of this weekend’s fundraising challenge. The video sees two teams from the community competing to come up with novel fundraising ideas for the shul in order to match the Sugar family donation. Watch the film here.
We wish the community well with their fundraising campaign, details of which are here.

Another of our communities in the news this week is New West End, whose resident choir, Mosaic Voices, has just had a new album released by Chandos Records, the UK's leading independent classical music label. They also release records for the Royal Philharmonic and the BBC orchestras.
The album is called Letter to Kamilla - Music in Jewish Memory and takes as its inspiration a letter written 80 years ago in Vienna by the great-grandmother of Mosaic Voices' founder, Michael Etherton. In 1942 Kamilla Breuer wrote to her children Lotte and Jozsi. Fortunately, they had escaped Nazi-occupied Austria. Kamilla was not as lucky. The letter was the last thing she wrote before being murdered in Auschwitz.
Michael told us: "Eighty years later, my vocal ensemble, Mosaic Voices, is writing back to her in the form of an album of Jewish songs. We want Kamilla to know that although she, her husband, and her sister, Minka, lost their lives in the Holocaust, all her children survived, and lived their lives successfully and happily in Britain, as proud Jewish people."
The album is available on all major platforms. Click here to get your copy!
It's not every day a shul choir gets a contract from a major record label and we are just thrilled for Mosaic Voices and everyone involved. Mazal tov!

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, when the country remembers the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. Our communities are holding a series of events to mark the day and you can watch a number of them and a selection of other educational programmes on TheUS.tv, our on-demand video platform.
