Thursday 20 July, 2023

Each year US Chesed produces 2,000 beautiful Rosh Hashanah cards which are sent to older members of our community and people who have had a difficult year, along with a honey cake. This small gesture means a great deal and helps them feel cared for at this special time of year.

This year one lucky child will have the chance for their very own card design to be used as the official US Chesed Rosh Hashanah card for 2023/5784!

We are asking for entries from children in Reception – Year 6 (ages 4 – 11). The design can be created using any materials you wish but should fit onto an A4 portrait piece of paper and be flat. The final design will be shrunk down to an A6 (postcard) sized card.

The winner will have their design transformed into the official Rosh Hashanah card for 2023, and will also win a prize! Click here to see last year's winner for inspiration.

Please send us a clear photograph of your child’s entry, along with your child’s full name plus the name, contact number and location of the child’s parent/guardian to marketing@theus.org.uk. Entries close on Friday 4 August 2023. Click here for full terms and conditions. Good luck!

A difficult message

We were recently informed that the 1990 Singer’s Prayer Book (“Third (Centenary) edition”) and the subsequent enlarged and revised editions (the old blue siddur and the old red siddur) contain a thank you in the introduction to someone who was later convicted of three counts of child sex abuse.

Having been made aware of this, and having seen a copy of the sentence issued by Hendon Magistrates Court, should you have one of these old siddurim at home, we are asking members to cross out the name of Sidney Greenbaum. As a convicted child sex abuser, his name has no place in our holy books.

If you have any concerns about abuse, whether current or historic, our Head of Safeguarding, Claudia Kitsberg, is available to speak confidentially. She can be reached via ckitsberg@theus.org.uk.

Mazal tov to our new Trustees!

United Synagogue Council elected four Trustees for the charity this week.

Current Trustees Dr Nicola Rosenfelder (South Hampstead United Synagogue) and Jacqui Zinkin (Golders Green Untied Synagogue) were re-elected for a second term of four years. Tristan Nagler (Hendon United Synagogue) and Simon Mitchell (Borehamwood and Elstree United Synagogue) were elected for the first time and we wish them mazal tov. You can read their short biographies here.

Professor Andrew Eder (Stanmore and Canons Park United Synagogue) and Barry Shaw (Borehamwood and Elstree United Synagogue) have stepped down as Trustees having served two terms. We thank them for their years of dedicated service to the United Synagogue. You will be missed!

Tisha B'Av starts on Wednesday evening - full details are below. Wishing you a tzom kal, an easy fast, and a meaningful day.
