Thursday 20 October, 2022

Around 20% of the population has a disability, whether it is visible or not. This is why it is so important for us at the United Synagogue to be committed to inclusion. We want to ensure that all of our communities and spaces are inclusive and welcoming to all, and that everyone is able to participate in all aspects of community life.
One of our recent initiatives to drive the United Synagogue towards being more inclusive is the launch of our ground-breaking new siddur (prayer book), published together with Gesher, Kisharon and JWeb, for adults and children with disabilities, both physical and learning. The siddur is called Siddur Lakol, which means ‘a siddur for everyone’. It features clear print with simplified translations and accessible transliteration of core prayers. The siddur will be available to buy within the next few weeks, and you can pre-order your copy by emailing publications@theus.org.uk. You can also read more about Siddur Lakol by clicking here.
We have also published a guide which offers suggestions to help create a meaningful and welcoming simcha for people with varying abilities and challenges. The guide answers questions such as who to contact and when, whether a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony is needed, and whether a ceremony needs to be held on Shabbat morning in shul. It also includes stories of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah of three children with different special needs. We hope that this guide will “break the ice” for early communication with your Rabbi, Rebbetzen and lay leaders. You can find the guide and more information about it by clicking here.
