The lyrics to one of the late Whitney Houston's most famous songs, The Greatest Love of All, sound very Jewish:

I believe the children are our future,
Teach them well and let them lead the way.
Show them all the beauty they possess inside.
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier,
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be.

The song was composed by Michael Masser, an American songwriter who was Jewish.

As we say in the Shema every morning and every evening: "V'shinantam L'vanecha" - you shall teach [these words] to your children. The United Synagogue and our communities know only too well that our children are our future and this week's You&US features a number of ways to engage our young people.

CRP Course for parents and children

Tribe is running another Certificate of Religious Practice (CRP) course for parents and children to help you gain CRP points when applying to Jewish schools. The six-part online course covers a variety of fascinating Jewish topics including the Jewish calendar, sibling rivalry and whether it's ok to say "I didn't mean it!".

Children's Service Leaders Training Session

Tribe is running a training session tonight at 8pm for all children's service leaders. It will include practical ideas on how to make services exciting and engaging whilst following the Covid-19 Guidelines.

Calling young leaders!

Tribe madrichim (leaders) are intrinsic to the success of our summer camps.  By joining the team, you’ll get the chance to make friends with a great group of like-minded people and create and run activities that keep participants engaged and entertained.

You will gain essential leadership and team working skills as well as the ability to innovate, improvise and create powerful programmes to inspire participants for years to come.

Could you be our next Deputy?

The United Synagogue is keen to have a US member represent us centrally at the Board of Deputies. You will work with US Trustees to understand the charity’s priorities and values and convey them to the Board’s Honorary Officers, fellow Deputies and staff as appropriate. This position will represent the United Synagogue centrally and is in addition to the many hard-working Deputies who represent United Synagogue communities.

You do not need to have been involved in the Board of Deputies before, though Trustees are keen to hear from candidates with relevant communal experience. The successful candidate will meet with one or more Trustees on a regular basis to ensure a good two-way flow of information.

If you are interested in applying, please send a few paragraphs outlining your interest and experience to deputy@theus.org.uk by 21 June 2021. Please include your name and synagogue. Trustees will elect one Deputy from the candidates. Good luck!
