Why am I here? Is Judaism relevant to me in the 21st century? Why didn’t God answer my prayers?
Rebbetzen Shuli Liss, Rebbetzen of Highgate United Synagogue, has published her first book which invites readers to join her journey to search for meaning and inspiration in a complex world where God is hidden.
A few years ago, Shuli began writing ad hoc emails to her members. Over time, she wrote more often, and, when the pandemic hit, the emails became her primary way of connecting with the community. In her emails, she shared messages of hope and encouragement during the difficult times. Because of the comfort and inspiration they gave, she was encouraged by a community member to turn them into a book.
As a result she has now published HIGHlights, modern musings on ancient wisdom, which explores some questions that Jews today may be grappling with. The book, a United Synagogue publication, is available now for £12.50 including P&P. Click here to buy your copy.
Rebbetzen Shuli Liss told us "I never planned to write a book. When I had time, I penned some thoughts that I hoped would be relevant to the community. I have tried to be honest and open in my writing, and have found that whilst our successes are often shared on social media, it is our failures and struggles that unite us. When we open up and share our difficulties and how we have grown or survived through them, we invite others to learn from our experiences. My hope is that this book will help us, together, to learn, grow and improve in our relationship with Hashem and with each other."
